That Was The Season That Was – Part I

This week I’m devoting to looking back at last season – the highs and lows, the good and the bad. Part I starts with June, July and August.

Backs to the Wall

I’m not a fan of the winter. It’s cold, it’s depressing and it causes football games to be cancelled. With Blues game not going ahead due to a frozen pitch, it left me to watch what was going on around us this weekend. Here’s what I thought.

Squad Analysis Pt II

Talking Points sponsored by John Hicken Industrial roofing and cladding materials

Yesterday I took a look at the Blues squad, highlighting who I thought was likely to leave, the shallowness of what was left and the areas Blues need to strengthen as a matter of urgency. Now the squad for the five day trip to Ireland has been announced, I thought I’d look at that and reflect further.

Johnson to Wolves?

Roll up, roll up. Everything must go sale at Birmingham City; get your players here.

It would appear from the Express and Star that the messageboard rumours of Roger Johnson’s imminent departure from the club is looking likely; a figure of £7million has been mooted as the agreed fee and RJ is apparently talking personal terms with our Black Country rivals.

Caldwell into the Cauldron

Birmingham City have completed their fifth signing of the summer with the Bosman free signing of Scottish defender Steven Caldwell. Caldwell, 30, has ten caps for Scotland and signs for us having been released by Wigan at the end of last season. It’s another signing that seems to have underwhelmed Blues fans – he’s over […]

The Roger Johnson Connection

A two line story on the Daily Mail website, firstly mentioned by Neil Moxley on twitter last night, has got some Blues fans a-flutter. It would appear that Peter Pannu’s insistence that no one was going to be sold cheaply was more than just bullish words for a newspaper reporter – Blues want big money for their players and have quoted Sunderland £14mil for Roger Johnson.

Paper Talk

If the media were to be believed, the vultures are already circling to pick the bones of a relegated Birmingham City team clean of what’s desirable, and as such many Blues fans are wondering who will be leaving us and how much for. I decided it was worth a trawl through the rumours, and to try and piece together something resembling the truth.

Back to the Chalkboard

Having had some time to reflect on the game yesterday against Wolves, I thought it would be interesting to review and analyse in detail some of the match to show where Blues were strongest and weakest.

Shooting Boots

A constant criticism of Birmingham City this season has been the perceived lack of attacking from the team. Many posters on messageboards have had a go at McLeish for being too defensive, and for not “giving it a go” enough. From the Guardian’s excellent chalkboards function, I have compiled some statistics on just how much Blues shoot on goal, as part of a bigger plan to have all statistics on this site. Please note all statistics are league only.
