A Dutchman, a Frenchman and an Irishman; Transfer Rumours

Having wrapped up the Bosman free transfers of Chris Burke and Marlon King, Birmingham City are still in the market for more players as they look to build a squad to bounce back from the ignominy of relegation at the first attempt. I thought I’d take a look at some of the rumours that have been doing the rounds, and try and give a picture of who these possible new players are.

Danny Koevermans

Although Sky released this report this afternoon on Blues’ possible interest in the 32 year old Dutchman, I saw it first on smallheathalliance.com about 2 hours earlier when a poster by the name of Bluekirby linked a report from Holland about Blues’ interests in the PSV man. Koevermans only made 14 league appearances last season, scoring just one goal; although these statistics are somewhat skewed as eleven appearances were from the bench and he only played 485 minutes of league football. However, in the cup he scored 4 goals in 3 games for the Eindhoven outfit, and his career record is a little better than 1 goal every 2 games in the Eredivisie.

The 6’3″ Dutchman is out of contract with PSV as of the end of June, and he’s made it clear in the past that he doesn’t see his future there. He’s a targetman type player; tall and strong and such would probably be a replacement for the likes of Nikola Zigic.

Bengali-Fode Koita

Koita is another player mentioned in the Sky Sports report talking about Koevermans above. The Parisian born striker hasn’t scored in Ligue 1 this year for Montpellier HSC, but he has only played 125 minutes worth of football. In truth, there isn’t much at all about him that I can find online; indeed, I’ve seen two different second nationalities for the 20 year old. I hope Eck has done his due diligence on this one; it could however be a case of an agent just casting about names in the hope of someone picking up his client.

Graham Cummins

I have to give complete credit on this one to another poster on Smallheathalliance.com, Legal_Bluenose. This is a rumour that hasn’t hit the papers yet, but I’ve been told that as part of the Cork City friendly we may be taking on the young Irish striker Cummins. Graham is 23 years old, and has a better than a one in two record for Cork City in the Irish League, and as such may present a chance of picking up a cheap striker with potential; something many fans have called out for. I understand people think that the Irish league isn’t that good – and in fairness, it isn’t that high a standard – but you only have to look at some of the starlets that have come from Ireland in recent years like Kevin Doyle and Shane Long (who both, coincidentally enough were ex-Cork lads) to realise that it may well be a good deal for Blues.

As more news breaks, and I hear more rumours I’ll do my best to update you on this blog; I understand that some of these names are a little underwhelming but the truth is we’re going to be looking at long-shots and freebies as we’re now a second tier team. However, if one of these long-shots come off, it could represent profit for us in the long term.
